WATER levels in the Zambezi, Okavango, Kunene, and Orange rivers are gradually rising, prompting authorities to urge residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential events.
As per the Namibian Hydrological Service’s Wednesday update, the Zambezi River at Katima Mulilo measured 1.36 meters on Wednesday morning, up from 1.33 meters on Tuesday. Similarly, the Okavango River at Rundu recorded a height of 5.22 meters compared to 5.15 meters the previous day.
“The water levels for the two rivers are higher compared to the same period last year,” added the hydrological services. Additionally, the Lower Orange River level at Blouputs increased from 2.14 meters yesterday to 2.48 meters this morning.
The Kunene River at Ruacana registered a flow of 337.60 m3/s this morning, doubling the flow recorded during the same period last year.
Authorities emphasize the need for contingency planning for flood risk mitigation and recovery in flood-prone regions. Communities residing in these areas are advised to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures.
Regarding major dams, the latest report on Wednesday indicates an overall water level of 58.7%, comparatively lower than the two previous rainy seasons. Dams in the central and southern regions stand at 22.6% and 66.3%, respectively, compared to 39.3% and 80.0% last year.
Satellite images over the past 24 hours depict substantial rains over the north-central and northeastern parts of the country, with scattered light showers observed over the central and eastern areas.
