MANY underprivileged schoolgirls miss school during their periods because they do not have sanitary pads.

The lack of access to sanitary pads for schoolgirls who are financially disadvantaged touched the heart of Helao Nafidi Mayor Darius Shaalukeni and prompted him to step in and assist.

Shaalukeni on Monday handed over 107 sanitary pads to Ndilokelwa Primary School in the Ohangwena circuit.

According to Shaalukeni, his aim is to restore the dignity of schoolgirls by assisting them with essential needs and to ensure they never miss school.

“We hear every day how young girls continues to stay away from school during their menstrual cycle, which mostly affects their school performance,” he said.

He added that these efforts will ensure that they meet the government’s effort to help young girls stay in school and ultimately complete their education.

Shaalukeni stressed that women find it difficult to afford proper sanitary products, and this has made them use unsafe sanitary products such as newspapers, cloths, and makeshift toilet paper pads.

He indicated that many of them put their health and well-being in harm’s way.

Empathy and acts of kindness can have a positive impact on society, says Shaalukeni, who believes that “in order to see change in communities, you have to start making those changes yourself.”
