THE Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has appointed Thomas Shapi as its new Deputy Director of Registration and Planning. The appointment is effective from May 1st.
Shapi currently serves as the ECN’s Control Administrative Officer in the Division of Registration and Planning, a position he has held since 2012. According to Peter Shaama, the ECN’s Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer, Shapi has effectively managed numerous electoral processes and related projects during his tenure.
In his new role, Shapi will be responsible for ensuring the participation of voters in regular and free elections, ensuring the efficient provision of services related to the maintenance of the national voters’ register, planning and coordination of electoral activities during general and supplementary registration of voters, as well as the polling and counting of votes, and the collation of results. Additionally, he will oversee the implementation and review of ECN policies.
Shapi holds qualifications in a wide range of fields and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Electoral Policy and Administration. Shaama expressed confidence that Shapi’s wealth of knowledge and experience will make him a valuable asset in his new role.
The ECN is currently a beehive of activities, with the presidential and national assembly elections only seven months away, and the general registration of voters is expected to take place from June 3rd to August 1st.
