Soaring sugar prices are hitting Africa’s poorest nations hard, forcing families and restaurants to cut back on this essential ingredient due to disappointing harvests and import tariffs. Bloomberg News reports that disappointing harvests in major sugar-producing countries have driven wholesale prices to their highest levels in over 12 years. Consumers in Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania are grappling with historically high sugar prices, further exacerbated by import tariffs, according to data from Nairobi-based commodities research group Kulea.
