Swapo orders Neka to halt elections – More Top Stories 3

Swapo has instructed the Namibian Exile Kids Association (Neka) to immediately cease its ongoing elective congress at Otjiwarongo due to allegations of internal conflict in the election of new leadership.

Delegates of Neka, which is awaiting official affiliation with Swapo, have convened at Otjiwarongo since Saturday to determine the association’s direction and new leadership.

Swapo secretary general Sophia Shaningwa was present at the Saturday launch of the organisation’s annual general meeting. On Sunday, Shaningwa issued a letter urging Neka to suspend its congress upon learning of the reported internal discord among candidates, citing potential negative repercussions for Swapo.

“Your ugly campaigns at this time when we are just a few months before the elections will spill over to the Swapo party and will affect our party campaign negatively,” Shaningwa wrote.

Shaningwa added that while attending the Saturday launch, she and environment and tourism minister Pohamba Shifeta advised that Neka should postpone the election of their new leadership.

“Therefore, I strongly feel that my advice to halt on your elections today is an appropriate one and is in the interest of both Neka and the Swapo party to which you are to affiliate,” Shaningwa said.

Meanwhile, sources confirm that the Neka delegates are still debating on a way forward following Shaningwa’s letter
