THE Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) has condemned, in the strongest terms, the acts of sexual assault levelled against its member who serves as a councillor in the municipality of Gobabis.
The suspect, who is the former Deputy Mayor of Gobabis, was due to appear in the Gobabis Magistrate Court on February 15, 2024. However, the accused councillor did not appear as police had not finalized the official charges against the suspect. Sources at the Gobabis Magistrate said that the matter did not appear on the court roll and that the suspect would be released.
Ephraim Nekongo, secretary of SPYL, said that during this time of adversity, the Swapo Party stands with the 19-year-old rape victim and his family. It is alleged that the councillor raped the victim on Tuesday of this week when they visited the offices of the Omaheke Regional Council to collect important documents.
“We are ready to offer our unconditional support to the victim,” Nekongo said. He added that SPYL members and the public are expected to demonstrate the highest level of ethical conduct, exemplary leadership, and morality befitting a member of the Swapo Party.
“We reiterate our stance against homosexuality and all that it entails as we call on our government to strengthen legal instruments opposing the destructive homosexual agenda,” Nekongo concluded.
