Swapo says green hydrogen will benefit Namibians

Swapo deputy secretary general Uahekua Herunga says the green hydrogen project will benefit all Namibians.

Herunga said this on Thursday.

“Green hydrogen was brought by the Swapo government and we will continue to do so for the Namibian people to benefit,” he said.

Despite the ruling party fully supporting the project, their manifesto, launched during the weekend by Swapo vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, only mentioned green hydrogen once.

According to Herunga, the project had already been implemented. Thus, it was not widely mentioned in the manifesto.

“It was not mentioned too much as you expect, or as you said, because it is already at an implementation stage,” he said.

The Namibian on Thursday reported that some opposition parties have criticised the green hydrogen project, stating that it is an experiment and is all hype.

According to Herunga, the opposition’s comments are nonsense.

“If the opposition parties are saying it is not going to work, they must say why, so for us it is nonsense, it will definitely work and will benefit everybody in Namibia,” he said.

Green hydrogen was mainly pushed by former president Hage Geingob who allowed his presidential advisor, James Mnyupe, the licence to sell the concept to the world.

On 22 December, Hydrogen Energy announced that the government, via the SDG Namibia One fund, finalised buying a 24% stake in the company worth billions.
