AUGUSTUS Nangolo, a Swapo Party local authority councillor recently elected as mayor of Oniipa town council in the Oshikoto Region, has been suspended. The suspension letter, dated January 16, 2024, signed by the party’s regional coordinator, Armas Amukwiyu, accuses Nangolo of collaborating with Swapo’s political competitors in a manner contrary to the party’s aims, objectives, and policies.
Nangolo, one of the four Swapo Party councillors in the Oniipa local authority, became mayor after being nominated by an IPC councillor, considered an “abomination” within Swapo Party norms. The IPC holds three councillor positions in the Oniipa town council.
In the suspension letter, Amukwiyu referred to the Swapo Party constitution the code of conduct and disciplinary procedures. Nangolo was directed to cease all party activities in Oniipa immediately, including communication with the town’s CEO and fellow Swapo councillors. The communication is valid until further notice.
Nangolo responded with anger, accusing Amukwiyu of attempting to destroy Swapo and demanding his resignation. He criticized fellow Swapo councillors for alleged negligence in attending town council meetings.
Amukwiyu declined to comment, stating that it is an internal matter of the party.
