THE leadership of the Swapo Party in the Oshikoto Region has decided to intervene in the political disagreements and infighting that have been simmering for years in the party’s Oniipa District.
“There is smoke there, and we, the regional leadership, are now going to meet the district leaders to amicably and comradely find out the source and cause of that smoke and see what to do about it,” said regional coordinator Armas Amukwiyu.
In a letter dated 25 September and addressed to the district coordinator Paulus Shimakeleni, it is said that an investigation committee has submitted a comprehensive report that exposed the seriousness of the “political and leadership crisis” in the Oniipa District.
Meeting on 22 September at Omuthiya, the regional executive unanimously agreed to visit the district as a matter of extreme urgency. They plan to meet the Swapo Party councillor for the Oniipa constituency, Oniipa town’s Swapo Party local councillors, members of the district executive, branch and section leaders, representatives of all party wings and affiliate organizations, as well as members and sympathizers of the party.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at the party’s district office in Oniipa town, near Ondangwa, on Friday morning.
Swapo’s political and leadership crisis in the Oniipa District has been simmering for many years.
Two years ago, Swapo local councillors disagreed on the election of Oniipa mayor, a situation that was fully exploited by the minority party, the IPC, to further sow distrust among Swapo leaders.
