SMUGGLERS of illicit goods and members of non-denominational churches who claim to have suffered a lot when General Sebastian Ndeitunga was at the helm of the Namibian police are among those furious about his appointment as the Ohangwena regional governor. They are demanding that President Hage Geingob reverse the appointment.

However, the leadership of the ruling Swapo Party in the region has welcomed Geingob’s appointment of Ndeitunga and has also expressed appreciation for the immense contributions made by the outgoing governor, Walde Ndevashiya, who handed over the regional reins of power to Ndeitunga today (Monday).

The Swapo leadership has distanced itself from purported Swapo Party members who have joined those calling for the reversal of Ndeitunga’s appointment, claiming that he is “too old” and is “not from Ohangwena.” In a statement issued in Eenhana on Monday morning, the regional party leadership urged Swapo party members to remain vigilant “against the influence of outsiders and enemies of progress” while maintaining discipline at all times.

Those opposed to the appointment have stated that they are preparing mass demonstrations and drafting a petition against the “unwanted governor,” but cracks have already appeared, and accusations are flying about supposed “infiltrators.”
