POLITICAL turbulence continues unabated in Omuthiya town, the seat of the Oshikoto Regional government. Two of the three opposition councillors have faced on-and-off suspensions since last year, but all three have now been issued an indefinite restraining order from their own political party, the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC).
Councillor Nghipudilo Ya Shiindi was suspended last year for 30 days and was suspended again this year for an indefinite period. Another IPC councillor, Moses Amukoto, was also suspended for 30 days earlier this year.
However, in a surprising move on 8 November, the IPC’s National General Secretary, Christine Aochamus, issued a restraining order to all three councillors (Ya Shiindi, Amukoto, and Josef) barring them from any town council activities.
“You are hereby barred from participating in any Omuthiya local authority activities with immediate effect from today, the 8th of November, at noon, and this restriction will remain in force until a directive rescinding the same is issued,” wrote Aochamus.
The restraining order came a day before the annual election of the town’s office-bearers, in which the town’s mayor, Johannes Ndeutepo, retained his position, but the council is practically unable to function properly.
The latest developments came shortly after Urban and Rural Development Minister Erastus Uutoni sent officials to Omuthiya to conduct an investigation to enable him to take the appropriate action.
