THE National Symbols Campaign, launched by Information Minister Peya Mushelenga in the Erongo Region three months ago, reached the Oukwanyama Palace in the Omhedi village, Ohangwena Region, on Monday.
Queen Martha Mwadinomho Kristian Nelumbu and her closest lieutenants listened attentively to the presentations and interacted with the officials who explained to them that the campaign emphasizes the importance of respecting national symbols, including how to behave when the National Anthem is being sung and when the Namibian Flag is being hoisted or lowered.
The officials also explained what the flag’s colours stand for and, upon Queen Nelumbu’s request, gave a detailed interpretation of the national anthem in Oshiwambo.
The officials said that national symbols are a source of unity, and the ongoing campaign is meant to inculcate a sense of national pride. The campaign has already covered nine of the country’s 14 regions.
Except for the traditional leaders, who are urged to transmit the message to their respective communities, the campaign targets the youth and school children.
“Making the nation aware of the national symbols is a permanent exercise, but this specific campaign started in June, and we hope to cover all 14 regions before the end of the year,” said Hosea Idipo, one of the three officials.
The other two members of the team are Vilho Hangula and Moses Haufiku.
Queen Nelumbu expressed appreciation and encouraged the information ministry’s officials to continue to enlighten the nation about the need to respect the country’s national symbols.
