Three men arrested for Erongo Red robbery in Karibib

THE Namibian Police in the Erongo region, Karibib, have arrested three men in connection with a cash heist after they intercepted two security guards and robbed them of money they were about to deposit in the bank.

According to Inspector Illeni Shapumba, spokesperson of the Erongo Police, the armed robbery happened on Monday, 9 October 2023, at around 09:15, at FNB near Pep Stores, Hidipo Hamutenya Road, Karibib town.

Inspector Shapumba said that two security guards of Alpha Security services were preparing to take the cash money collected from Erongo Red offices in Usakos and Karibib into the bank when suddenly six men armed with a knife attacked them.


“They held the driver (guard) at knifepoint and assaulted his colleague at the back on the back of his head with the service firearm which they robbed from them. The suspects then robbed the two victims of the following: two cellphones and three plastic money containers two with money belonging to Erongo Red. The total cash in the containers is N$24,624.50,” Shapumba said.

He added that the suspects stabbed the front right tire of the victim’s car with a knife and drove away in a red Pollo getaway car.

The police, however, caught up with some of the thieves and recovered a gas pistol and one shotgun robbed from the security guards. The cover of the driver’s cellphone, as well as his ID and driver’s license, and three damaged plastic money containers without money, were also recovered.

Three accused persons; aged 41, 31, and 31 years old were arrested.

Police are still looking for four other outstanding suspects in the case.

The two getaway cars: A rented Red Pollo was found abandoned at Dennis plot about seven kilometres from Karibib towards Omaruru, and a white Jetta belonging to one of the arrested persons was found about two kilometres from the Pollo towards Omaruru.

Investigations continue.
