THE fatal road accident involving the Inspector General of the Namibian Police, Lieutenant-General Joseph Shikongo, in December last year, is being addressed not only by the conventional justice system but is also the subject of community courts.
The incident occurred on the Ondangwa-Oshikango road in December last year when Shikongo’s private vehicle collided with an oncoming vehicle. Shikongo, who was alone, was injured, while all three occupants of the other vehicle died on the spot. They are Frans Ndengu, Stefanus Lukas, and Sofia Annanias.
Informanté was reliably informed that the family of one of the deceased persons has approached the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority where the matter was heard and finalized in line with customary laws. According to these laws, someone who causes the death of another is required to provide ten head-of-cattle (or N$15,000) to the bereaved family, regardless of the level of culpability. This is not necessarily a fine or compensation but rather a token of reconciliation.
Meanwhile, relatives and friends of yet another victim staged a peaceful demonstration in Ondangwa and handed over a petition to Oshana’s Regional police commander Naftal Lungameni Sakaria.
Speaking during a community meeting at Oshakati on Wednesday, Shikongo mentioned that he gave the green light to the demonstrators.
