Two male suspects are in custody, and their truck was seized by the Namibian Police at Kongola after contraband was found in their possession during a routine search at the checkpoint.

The suspects, aged 27 and 37, respectively, are said to be employed by a local trucking company.

They were returning from Zambia on Thursday, heading to the coast.

NamPol regional commander in Zambezi, Commissioner Andreas Shilelo, addressed the media in Kongola following the discovery of the illegal consignment.

The street value of the illegal goods is estimated at over N$140,000.

In the same week, some wooden artifacts meant for sale, as well as three undocumented water pumps, were also seized at the same checkpoint after they were not declared at customs.

Shilelo warned those travelling to provide proof and be in possession of a permit allowing them to transport such items.

At the same time, Shilelo addressed the ongoing social media buzz about alleged harassment by members of the police at checkpoints when they require proof of identification during luggage searches in the region, particularly those travelling by bus.

He added that, as the region borders multiple countries, it is a proven gateway into illicit markets for a large number of foreign nationals into Namibia, thus the need for inspection and the establishment of identity for the community’s safety.

The regional commander asked for cooperation and patience, as sometimes, due to a lack of manpower, travellers are kept at checkpoints longer than needed.
