Two minors struck to death by lightning

TWO minors, a 15-year-old girl, and a 12-year-old girl died in two separate incidents in the Ohangwena region after being struck to death by lightning, while close to 10 children were also injured by the lightning.

This brings the death toll of those killed by lightning to three, after a 20-year-old woman was also struck to death by lightning in Bethanie over the past weekend.

According to Inspector Raimbert Muronga of the Namibian police, Penexupifo Kambosho Erastus, a 15-year-old Namibian girl, died on Sunday, 12 November 2023, around 14:30 at Onanghulo village, Eenhana area, Ohangwena region. It is reported that the deceased was fatally struck while four other victims sustained injuries in the process. It is further reported that the hut in which the children sought shelter from the rain caught fire after being struck by lightning.

“They were found in the hut where they went to seek shelter from the storm rain. The body of the deceased burned beyond recognition inside the hut. The four victims were taken to Eenhana District State Hospital to get medical attention,” Inspector Muronga said.

The second case of lightning also happened on Sunday, 12 November 2023, at about 14:50 at Key to Jesus Church, Onamwoolo village. It is alleged that a Namibian minor girl identified as Johanna Kavenahoni Nambahu, 12 years old, was fatally struck by lightning while she was under a tree with other children.

Inspector Muronga said that the victim was declared dead by the medical doctor at Eenhana District State Hospital.

The body is kept in the Eenhana Hospital mortuary pending the post-mortem examination. Six minor children who were under the tree with the deceased, three boys and three girls aged between 8 and 12, were also taken to Eenhana District State Hospital after they got injured as well.
