AGRICULTURE is the backbone of any economy, and 70% of all Namibians depend on it for their livelihood.
Thus, Uuvudhiya Constituency Councillor Timoteus Shivute said the area has faced challenges with a proper road network and water.
Uuvudhiya constituency is situated in the southwest part of the Oshana region, with a distance of 90 km from Oshakati.
Hence, Shivute told the inhabitants during a consultative meeting with farmers on Wednesday that they lack water, and their livestock are affected in the process.
He indicated that the area faces a challenge of water shortage, and this year they have not received adequate rainfall to last them for the next rainy season.
“We did not even receive floodwater in our area for earth dams to be filled, posing a challenge for our farmers,” he said.
He also expressed concern about the threat to livestock in the area, saying farmers are losing their cattle, goats, sheep, and now also donkeys to criminals.
Thus, Shivute noted that they need police services closer to the people in the area.
Oshana Governor Elia Irimari, on his part, assured farmers that the government is working around the clock to bring desirable services closer to the people.
“We have been having sleepless nights trying to tackle issues related to addressing service delivery needs in Uuvudhiya,” he said.
He added that they are addressing poor road networks, water scarcity, and implementing their veld fire mitigation plans.
