In a call to action echoing across Khomas Regional constituencies, a plea from Secretary to the Cabinet, George Simataa, seeks the assistance of 100 volunteers for the preparations surrounding the late former President Hage Geingob’s funeral.

Simataa, emphasising the qualities sought in volunteers, stated, “We are seeking hardworking, energetic, and mature unemployed youth from all Khomas Regional constituencies to join hands in the noble task of ensuring a dignified farewell to our beloved leader.”

In a parallel move, the Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture has declared this Friday, 23 February 2024, a school holiday. Executive Director Sanet Steenkamp emphasized that this aligns with section 9 of the Basic Education Act 3 of 2020, fostering a shared sense of mourning and preparation leading to the National Memorial Service on Saturday.

In addition, Steenkamp also encouraged school participation in the official procession, urging principals, teachers, and learners from Windhoek schools to identify 15 to 20 representative groups to participate in full school uniform on Friday.

As the world converges on Windhoek to pay respects, Simataa revealed that 27 countries, with 18 led by Heads of State, are attending the funeral service of Geingob. He urged road users to adhere to traffic rules, ensuring a smooth process for the international dignitaries navigating the capital city.

Dispelling rumours in a circulating message spread misinformation, Simataa clarified, “Contrary to rumours, roads won’t be lock-jammed, and there are no 650 SADC police officers in the country. Please be assured that this information is false.”

The message claims, “48 heads of state have confirmed their attendance for the late president’s funeral, and 600 SADC police officers arrived today alone to assist with logistics.”

The official memorial service slated for Saturday, 24 February 2024, at Independence Stadium in Windhoek, will witness tributes from Chief Mourner President Nangolo Mbumba, and other international guests.

The official burial will be at Heroes Acre on 25 February 2024 will mark a moment of reflection for the public.

Mbumba has declared 25th February 2024 as a public holiday, following suit, 26th February 2024 will also be a holiday.
