Walvis Bay municipality ready to start with road repairs

The Walvis Bay municipality will soon commence with road works and pothole repairs.

Walvis Bay mayor Trevino Forbes says the municipality’s in-house pothole repair team, which was established two years ago, but not operational due to a lack of equipment and materials, has made progress.

He noted at a council meeting last week that the issue was recently resolved.

The council will continue with four external pothole contracts to cater for critical areas including Agaat Street, Khomas Hochland Street, Sixteenth Avenue, Johannes Nampala Avenue, Nathaniel Maxuilili Avenue and Dune Street at Kuisebmond and Narraville.

Forbes thanked the town’s residents for their commitment to settling their accounts, saying this contributed immensely towards allocating funds to the projects.

He also announced that road works in partnership with the Road Fund Administration will start from mid-2024.

The roads that are earmarked for rehabilitation are those that are primarily serving the Port of Walvis Bay, including Hannah Mupetami Street, 3rd Street East, Railway Street, 5th Street East, 6th Street East and Rikumbi Kandanga Road.

“The rehabilitation and construction of these roads will significantly improve the town’s transportation network, enhancing connectivity and promoting economic growth.”

He said the council has set aside N$5 million for the enhancement of the cleanliness of the town, which includes the provision of wheelie and street bins.

Council has also started to engage the private sector, in assisting with keeping the town clean through cleaning campaigns.
