FNB Wanderers edged Trustco United in a close encounter, while FNB Unam and FNB Grootfontein both recorded comfortable victories in the Women’s Rugby League over the weekend.
At Trustco United Park, Wanderers just managed to pip the home side 8-7 in a tough encounter.
With both sides displaying great defence and tackling as if their lives depended on it, chances were few and far between.
Wanderers started gaining territorial advantage midway through the first half, with centre Sune Wittmann putting in some rampaging runs, while fellow centre Euodia Bassinghthwaighte went over in the corner, only for the try to be disallowed due to an earlier infringement.
Wanderers finally opened their account through a Wittmann penalty, but United came back strongly, and Wanderers had to defend desperately to keep them at bay until the halftime break.
United maintained the pressure after the break, and after a quick backline attack broke down, flyhalf Michelle Slinger went over from the second phase movement in the corner. Slinger added a great conversion from the touchline to give United a 7-3 ahead.
Wanderers came surging forward and regained the lead after a great try by rightwing Lizzle Tauxas, who eluded three flying tackles to dive over in the corner.
United had a chance to regain the lead when they won a penalty in the closing stages of the match, but Slinger’s attempt was just short, as Wanderers held on for a slender victory.
That win saw Wanderers stretching their lead at the top of the log to 53 points, while United moved down to third position on 43 points.
FNB Unam moved up to second position on 47 points after a comprehensive 38-0 victory against FNB Kudus at Walvis Bay.
Unam scrumhalf Ivonne Kooper was the star of the show, scoring four tries, while eighthman Mandy Hansen and fullback Fiola Vliete scored one each, with Vliete adding four conversions.
Grootfontein, meanwhile, beat Rehoboth by default after the latter failed to make the trip up north to Grootfontein.
With only one round of league matches now remaining, the semifinal spots have already been determined, with Wanderers due to meet Kudus, while Unam will meet United.
