THE senior national cricket women’s team, the Capricorn Eagles, are now full-time professionals after signing employment contracts with Cricket Namibia (CN).
This historic milestone marks the first time female cricketers in Namibia have been offered professional contracts and establishes cricket as the only sport code in Namibia with full-time employment contracts for both men and women national team players.
The contracted players are Kayleen Green, Sune Wittmann, Arrasta Diergaardt, Edelle van Zyl, Bianca Manuel, Irene van Zyl, Wilka Mwatile, Mekelaye Mwatile, Naomi Benjamin and Saima Tuhadeleni.
CN says this groundbreaking move highlights its commitment to the growth of women’s cricket and marks a significant step forward for women’s cricket in the country.
CN chief executive Johan Muller yesterday in a statement said: “For the first time we have been able to professionalise the women’s game. This is a significant moment for sport in the country.”
The contracts were negotiated and signed in February and were announced at the recent groundbreaking ceremony of the Namibia Cricket Ground, which is being constructed to host two world cups in 2026 and 2027.
“It’s the first time women have been signed on contracts where cricket is their occupation. Ten ladies now have the opportunity to support their households by pursuing their passion. We want to thank Capricorn Group and everyone involved,” Muller said.
The momentous occasion also highlighted the hard work and dedication the 10 talented athletes have put into the game, he said.
The Capricorn Eagles, currently ranked 17th in the world in women’s T20I team rankings, have consistently been thriving and showcased determination on the global stage, Muller said.
With the support of these professional contracts, they are poised to reach new heights and make Namibia proud, said Capricorn Group spokesperson Marlize Horn.
“This is a very exciting day for women in Namibia and the Capricorn Eagles. Thank you to the board and management of Cricket Namibia for this unbelievable and amazing gesture. We know the Capricorn Eagles will make Namibia proud,” she said.
Horn emphasised Capricorn Group’s satisfaction with its association with CN.
“My personal opinion is that cricket is the most professionally run sport in Namibia, so we are very proud of our association with Cricket Namibia.
“From our side, players, congratulations on receiving your contracts. We know you will now work even harder and make us proud,” she said.
